Well-Differentiated Liposarcoma (WDL) VS Lipoma

Sept. 16, 2024

Features Favoring Well-Differentiated Liposarcoma (WDL) Over Lipoma:

1. Size and Location:

Size: WDLs tend to be larger, often >5 cm in size. Lipomas are typically smaller.

Location: WDLs are more often found in deep soft tissues such as the retroperitoneum, deep muscles, or in the thigh. Lipomas tend to be superficial (subcutaneous).

2. Margins and Infiltration:

Margins: WDLs often have poorly defined or lobulated margins, while lipomas have smooth, well-circumscribed borders.

Infiltration: WDLs may infiltrate surrounding tissues or structures, whereas lipomas are non-infiltrative.

3. Imaging Features (CT/MRI):

Heterogeneity: WDLs are more heterogeneous on imaging, showing thickened, irregular fibrous septa or nodules within the fatty mass. Lipomas are homogeneous and show uniform fat density.

Septations: WDLs may have thicker (>2 mm) and irregular septations. Lipomas have thin, regular sep...
