Caplan Syndrome

This is also known as rheumatoid pneumoconiosis

The patient has a background of pneumoconiosis.


Features

  • Rapidly developing well-defined nodules of 5–50 mm
  • The nodules can cavitate, becoming thick-walled and calcifying
  • Typically located in the upper lobes of the lungs
  • Background parenchymal changes are consistent with pneumoconiosis
  • May have small pleural effusion
