Aneurysmal bone cyst

Benign expansile bony neoplasms, composed of numerous haemorrhagic channels and cystic spaces


Age: < 30 (80% below the age of 20)


Types: Primary (70%) and Secondary (30%)

A secondary ABC is an ABC associated with another tumour, such as a GCT or osteoblastoma


Location

Long bones (50-65%)

- Classically located eccentrically within the metaphysis of long bones, adjacent to the growth plate

- Usually femur / tibia


Spine and pelvis (20-30%)

- Classically begins in the posterior elements with extension into vertebral body (75%)

- Can involve 2 vertebral bodies (25%)

- Most commonly involves thoracic (34%) / lumbar (31%)

Other locations can include: Jaw, hands, feet and sinuses

- Sponge like appearance due to the presence of multiple cysts
